Teresa Mary
Treiber
Oct 9, 1929 — Jul 14, 2026
Bassano
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Teresa Mary Treiber (nee Kirwan) in Bassano, Alberta on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026 at the age of 96 years. Teresa was born on October 9th, 1929 in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan to Joseph and Amy Kirwan. She was the 8th of 10 children and as a young lady she ventured to Bassano to live with her sister Mabel, where she helped out with her young family and hotel cafe business. Teresa met Reuben at a dance and their life together began. They were married on December 16th, 1950 and at that time were residing in Chancellor. They lived in many different CPR stations in southern Alberta before settling in Bassano. During these years they were blessed with three children, Bonnie, Gloria and Alan. Teresa was a stay-at-home Mom until her children were all school age and then she went to work for her sister Frances at her cake board factory. After Frances sold her business, Teresa continued to work for the new owners until she retired at age 63. In retirement, Reuben and Teresa took many trips with their motorhome. They travelled to numerous destinations in Canada and the US. There were probably many tense moments on these trips when they travelled through large cities, as this was pre-GPS and Teresa was not a good map reader. Once they got to their evening destination and set up camp, they would always enjoy a beverage together. Navigating was her weakness but packing her holiday trailer and knowing where everything was located, was a skill that she possessed. If Teresa didn't have it in her trailer, chances are you didn't need it. Camping was a big part of their lives and they enjoyed lots of time with family and friends, especially at the Shuswap in the early years and Crawling Valley in the later years. Teresa was a very loyal member of Bassano Royal Purple and during that time she received a 25 Year Perfect Meeting Attendance Award. Teresa was a wonderful host, her door was always open and she was welcoming to everyone. The Saturday Night Supper tradition at Reuben and Teresa's was a huge part of their children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's lives. She was the most loving and caring Mom and Grandma and was very involved in all of her family's extra-curricular activities. "Spitfire" was Teresa's childhood nickname and that feisty side stayed with her all through her life. Occasionally you would get a "special salute" from Teresa and for those of you that knew her well, know what it was. She will truly be remembered for just being herself and for being kind, honest, fair and loving. Reuben passed away in 2011 and after living 5 years alone in her home, Teresa moved into Playfair Lodge. From there she moved into Sunrise Gardens in Brooks and then back to Long Term Care in Bassano, for her last couple of years. Teresa was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years Reuben; parents Joseph and Amy Kirwan; mother and father-in-law Dena and Herb Treiber; siblings Bart, Kay, Mable, Bill, Francis, Joey, Lee, Jim and Mary; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Kirwan, Dick O'Connor, Ralph Eckman, Florence Moen, Henry Schaffer, Athlone Cooper and Joe Silbernagel and Cliff and Ina Trieber, Bob Heryford and Andy Gordichuck on the Treiber side of the family. She is lovingly remembered by her children; Bonnie, Gloria (Kerry) and Alan (Monique); grandchildren, Corey Ann (Joel), Tanis (Pat), Stacie (Quinton), Monica (Kyle), Keith (Paige), Stephen, Austin (Rianne) and Lucas; 16 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Darlene Kirwan, Verna Heryford and Judy Gordichuck; brother-in-law Rick Trieber and numerous nieces and nephews. Teresa's family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Bassano Health Centre fort the wonderful care Teresa received during her stay. Your kindness brought comfort to Teresa and her family during a difficult time and are grateful to you. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 22nd at 2:00 PM from the Elks Hall in Bassano. In memory of Teresa, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly Bassano and District Health Foundation, Box 120, Bassano, Alberta T0J 0B0.
