It is with profound sadness that the family of Roger Charles Brown announce his passing on July 26th in Medicine Hat at the age of 77 with family by his side.

Roger was born on January 21, 1949 in Bassano, Alberta where he was raised alongside his five brothers and sisters. After spending several years working in Calgary, Roger moved to Brooks, Alberta in 1977 where he built a life, raised his family, and became a deeply respected member of the community.

In Brooks, Roger built a life with Judy Brown and together they raised their three children, Michael, Lisa and David. Family was always one of Roger's greatest sources of pride, and the love he had for his children and grandchildren remained one of the defining parts of his life.

Roger dedicated much of his career to the oil and gas industry as a skilled millwright. His strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to safety eventually led him to establish RCB Safety where he proudly provided safety services to oil and gas companies. He took great pride in his work and earned the respect of those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

While Roger worked hard, it was the way he lived his life that people will remember most. Roger was a man who could never sit still for long. He loved to drive, whether it was a road trip, a visit with family, or simply being out and about. He was always moving, always busy, and always looking for something to do, but most importantly, he was always looking for someone to help.

Roger never met a problem he wouldn't try to fix or a person he wouldn't try to help. Whether it was repairing a vehicle, helping with a project, or simply lending a hand when someone needed him, Roger would drop whatever he was doing to be there. He never expected anything in return. Helping others was not something he thought twice about, it was simply who he was.

Roger embraced life with enthusiasm and had a passion for sports, especially hockey. A talented goaltender, he spent many years playing the game he loved before finishing his hockey career with the Brooks Red Oldtimers Hockey Team.

His love of sports extended far beyond hockey. In the early 1980s, Roger helped launch and coach the Brooks Ringette Association. He continued coaching long after his own children were grown, becoming affectionately known to generations of young athletes as "Mr. Brown". Over time, "Mr. Brown" became more than just a name, it represented the kindness, encouragement, patience, and dedication Roger brought to every player and family he touched. Roger's impact on young athletes and the Brooks community lasted for decades. He was remembered not only for teaching the game, but for the way he made people feel supported, encouraged, and valued.

Roger enjoyed camping, long walks, sharing stories, and spending time with family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved making people laugh. Whether around a campfire, at the hockey rink, or gathered with loved ones, Roger had a way of making people feel welcome.

Above all else, Roger was a devoted father and grandfather. He was the kind of father others could aspire to be like. He was dependable, generous, and fiercely devoted to his family. His children and family always knew they could count on him, whether they needed advice, a helping hand, or simply someone who would be there without being asked.

Nothing mattered more to Roger than his grandchildren. He had a remarkable way of making each of them feel important, taking an active interest in their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, and enjoying the time they shared together. Whether it meant travelling across Alberta to cheer from the stands at hockey games and dance recitals, celebrating milestones, or simply spending quiet moments together, Roger showed up. His presence is what his grandchildren will remember most.

To his grandchildren, he was lovingly known as "Grandpa With The Hat". A name that captured the familiar sight of Roger with his ball cap on and the warmth, comfort, and love he brought into their lives. Family was at the heart of who Roger was. He was a loyal and devoted brother who cherished the bond he shared with his siblings. He stayed connected, made time for family gatherings, and never hesitated when someone needed him. Whether it was offering advice, lending a hand, or simply being present, Roger's siblings knew they could count on him. His loyalty, generosity, and love for his family were shown through everything he did.

Roger will be lovingly remembered by his children Michael (Amber), Lisa (Martin) David (Karrie), his cherished grandchildren, Maxwell, Colton, Jace, Rylan, Tysen, Tasia, Mataya, brothers John (Cheryl), Neil, Sisters Rosalind, Susan (John), extended family members, dear friends, former teammates, players, and members of the Brooks community whose lives he touched over the years.

Roger was predeceased by his beloved parents, Jack and Nan of Bassano, his brother Paul of Lyalta, his nephew Jason of Nanaimo, and his nephew Christopher of Calgary.

Roger leaves behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. He taught those around him that showing up for others is one of life's greatest gifts. Whether as a father, grandfather, brother, coach, mentor, neighbour, or friend, Roger made people feel valued simply by being present.

His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he helped build, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, humour, and unwavering presence. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 15th at 12:00 PM from the Heritage Inn and Convention Centre. In memory of Roger donations may be made directly to the charity of one's choice.
