Phyllis Viola Smit (Hemsing), beloved wife of the late Marinus Smit, passed away in Brooks, Alberta on September 25, 2023, at the age of 79 years. Phyllis was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on December 3, 1943, to George and Viola Hemsing. She was the eldest of seven children and spent her days helping her parents on the farm. Phyllis was involved in many aspects of the community, from teaching leadership classes to being a member of 4-H and Toastmasters. She was a very active member of the St. Mary's Parish in Brooks and made a lasting impression on many of the parishioners. Phyllis' great love of travel took her to many places around the world, including several pilgrimages to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Phyllis will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, her love of her family and friends, and her passion for the Lord. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Marinus Smit, her parents George and Viola Hemsing, and her brother Kelvin Hemsing. She is survived by her children Leah and Guy Cyr, Shona and Brent Powell, Craig and Kari Smit, and Collin and Norma Smit; her grandchildren Marina Powell, Brady, Emily and Chloe Cyr, Abby and Brady Cowan, Nathan and Janelle Smit, and Chase and Georgia Smit; five great-grandchildren Ryland, Eastynn and Slade Pidborochynski, Olivia Cyr and Emma Cowan; sisters Linda Adams and Pam Hemsing, brothers Jerry, Russell and Brad Hemsing; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The family of Phyllis would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Brooks Hospital and the staff at the Newbrook Lodge.
