Norman Herbert Oberhamer of Brooks, beloved husband of Judy Oberhamer, passed away in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the age of 93. Born to Herbert & Martha (Scheuer) Oberhamer on September 26, 1932, in Medicine Hat. Norm spent his early years in Medicine Hat, where he was gifted a clarinet from his father. Norm took lessons by joining a band and took to it right away. In his teenage years, the family moved to Tilley where he was approached to take over leading the Tilley Band, which began his career as a band leader. He taught himself all wind and brass instruments, and eventually conducted bands in Bassano, Brooks, Calgary, Cessford, Duchess, Gem, Hussar, Red Deer Lake, Rolling Hills, Rosemary, Scandia, Standard, and Strathmore. Norm was instrumental in forming the EID Marching Band that he enjoyed and was so proud of. He also formed a dance band, Norm's Kombo Kings, which played throughout the area and in 1964, he was offered a job to manage a prominent music store in Calgary. in August 1959, Norm met and fell in love with Judy Yuill and they were married on November 6, the same year. They were blessed with two sons, Douglas in 1970 and Brandon in 1973. In addition to music, Norm always had a desire to try farming. Not being afraid to try something new, he and his young family moved to Gem and purchased a farm. Farming while also teaching five community bands proved to be a challenge but also provided some of the most memorable and rewarding years for his family. Throughout his life, a true passion of his was building and flying radio-controlled aircraft. His exceptional attention to detail and his love of flying created many lasting memories for the whole family. Thanks to the kind support of the many caregivers and neighbours these past years, Norm was able to live in his home in Brooks with Judy until just a few months ago. He passed away in Medicine Hat with family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 66 years, Judy; his sons, Douglas (Christine) and Brandon (Suzanne); grandchildren, Ashley (Daniel) Grigor, Zachary, Jacob, Scarlett, and Natalie; great-grandchildren, Zoey and Lila; sister, Rita (Ralph) Thurn; sisters-in-law, Janet Oberhamer, Valerie Van Kreuningen, Nina (Charles) Moreau, and Margret Yuill as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Norm was predeceased by his sister Gladys, brother Gordon, brothers-in-law Barry, Ted, and Blaine Yuill, Joe Van Kreuningen and sisters-in-law Colleen Yuill and Henny Yuill. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooks, with Pastor John Theiss officiating. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery.
