Mary Doris
Fraser
May 8, 1941 — May 27, 2025
Gem
Mary Doris Fraser (Ion) passed away at Sunrise Gardens, Brooks on May 27, 2025 at the age of 84 years, with her family members by her side. Doris was born May 8, 1941 in Medicine Hat, the 4th of 6 children to Bill and Mary Ion. Doris grew up in the community of Gem, Alberta and while hanging out with her brother Ken she met Wallace Fraser. They were married on September 17,1959. They celebrated the arrival of their son Neil in 1960, and daughter Barb joined the family in 1963. Doris was a devoted community member. She was active in the Gem Ladies Club, secretary of the Gem community association during the move of the hall and on the picture committee for the Dreams and Ditch banks history book. Doris was an enthusiastic ball player and enjoyed participating as a member of the Gem Ladies softball team and active in the curling club. She was a sports mom and drove many miles taking her children to hockey and figure skating. Doris was an amazing cook and fed many family, friends, salesmen, bull buyers and team ropers in her lifetime. Her recipes are still in circulation with family members and close friends (just ask Teddy). She loved to be in her yard and spent many hours mowing, trimming and tending to her apple trees. Over the years, Doris worked in Bassano at Lynndale Children's Wear and Nature made products (cake board factory). Doris loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was an awesome grandma. She made a point to stay in touch with them and was always interested in the activities in their lives. As her MS progressed, she was unable to be as active in the community, so she found new interests to occupy her time. She began tole painting, and if it did not move it was painted. She has an amazing painted lunch box and coffee pot collection. When painting became difficult, she turned her talents to rug hooking. She never once complained of what she lost in mobility but found a new direction to travel in. In 2017, Doris moved to Sunrise Gardens in Brooks. For the next 8 years she made many new friendships with the staff and residents and resided there until her passing. Doris is survived by her husband Wallace; son Neil (Karen), granddaughter Tayla (Charles) their son Mason, grandson Damen; daughter Barb (Grant), grandson Colter (AJ) and their children Sage, Quincy, Ellie, Otis; sister Eleanor Simpson, brother Sam Ion, many nieces and nephews. To honour Doris's wishes there will be no service. Donations in Doris Fraser's name can be made Directly to the MS Society, 250 Dundas Street West, Suite 500, Toronto, Ontario M5T 2Z5. A heartfelt thank you to Dr Coetzee, homecare and the amazing staff at Sunrise Gardens.
