Marlene
Evers
Feb 10, 1946 — May 13, 2025
Brooks
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our beautiful mama, Marlene Madelaine Evers on May 13th, 2025 in Brooks, Alberta at the age of 79. She was born in Leader, Saskatchewan on February 10th, 1946. She resided in Richmound, Saskatchewan, until the age of 8, at which time her family moved to Medicine Hat, where she received her education at St Pat's, St. Mary's and McCoy High School. At age 17 Marlene moved to Calgary and eventually met and married John Evers on February 14th 1967. During her time in Calgary, she worked as a telephone operator at AGT. They had two daughters, Laurie and Roxanne and moved their family to Brooks in 1972. John and Marlene managed the Plains Motel for 30 years, during which time they formed many lifelong friendships with guests at the motel, especially those that came during hunting season. Sometimes it seemed as though there was a revolving door of friends coming and going. We have countless memories of all of the many many people in mom and dad's life and fun times, especially the New Year's parties they would host with their fun group from Acadia Valley and the Spath family, among others. Mom was a wonderful host and made delicious meals for many. John and Marlene and family spent many vacations at Shuswap Lake, camping, boating, fishing, and spending time with friends. Marlene had a beautiful and adventurous spirit and enjoyed travelling to many places around the world, including Jerusalem, Hawaii, Mexico, Belize, Cayman Islands, a cruise to the Barbadoes-Panama Canal, an Alaskan Cruise and both the Rhine and Danube River cruises. John and Marlene enjoyed several winters at the Fountain of Youth in California after retirement, with special family members Brian and Linda Wilde. Her last adventure was to Costa Rica in February 2025, with her special friend and travel partner Rubin, where they enjoyed zip-lining and feeding the monkeys. Marlene was predeceased by her father Jim and mother Rachael Weigel (Schwengler); brother Joe Weigel; sisters, Theresa Deary, Rose (Jim Lannan); husband John Evers and grand daughter Karlee Rutschmann. Marlene is survived by her daughters, Laurie Rutschmann and Roxanne Evers (Bill); grand daughters, Autumn and Summer Rivoire; special friend Rubin Seidlitz; sister-in-law Bessie Weigel, as well as many nieces and nephews. Marlene was very active in her community. She was a member of the C.W.L and the Prairie Pioneers. She volunteered at various places including the Brooks Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, the Brooks Health Centre, as well as taking communion to some of the residents at the Newbrook Lodge, and Long-Term Care facilities. Her activities included golfing as often as she could, playing bocce, curling, line dancing, aquacise classes, playing cards and going to dances as well as travelling and spending time with family. She thoroughly enjoyed her weekly Friday night dinners out with "the gang". She loved all of her friends and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. She was also an avid gardener and worked hard in her beautiful garden in her retirement house, before moving to a smaller place, which she also loved. Marlene was amazing in so many ways, but mostly she was a wonderfully loving and fun mother and grand mother. She cherished her grand daughters so very much. Marlene will be remembered for her smile, positivity, her energy, and for the happiness that she brought to so many. She wrote a note some time ago with some of her final wishes in the event of her passing. In it she said, "Don't be sad, I have had many joys and heartaches in my life, but so do we all". May we all take a page from our beautiful mother's book and live and love life like she did. We would like to thank the medical team (s) at the Brooks Health Centre and the CICU at the Foothills Medical Centre for her care while in hospital, and a special thank you to a very special friend Jennifer Bunn for being by mom's and family's side while in the CICU. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Breakthrough T1D (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) which was a cause that was close to her heart. Breakthrough T1D Canada, 235 Yorkland Blvd., Suite 1201, Toronto, Ontario M2J 4Y8. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 4th at 1:00 PM from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev.
