Lawrence "Larry" Seitz—beloved husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, and friend—passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, in Brooks, Alberta, after living a long, full, and remarkable life. Larry was born in Duchess, Alberta, on September 27, 1936, and grew up in the Clancy/Duchess area. He attended school in Clancy, Rosemary, and Duchess, carrying the values of rural Alberta with him throughout his life: honesty, hard work, loyalty, and a deep commitment to community.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Mildred Seitz; his brothers CJ Seitz, Tom Seitz, and Ed Seitz; his sisters-in-law Irene Seitz and Carol Seitz; and his brother‑in‑law Lorne Lutic. He is lovingly remembered by his brother Earl (Velma) Seitz and his sisters Dianna (Al) Hutchinson and Sharlene Lutic, who continue to carry forward the family's stories, humour, and shared history.
On November 25, 1961, Larry married the love of his life, Renee. Together they built a beautiful life and raised five sons: Rick (Cheryl), Darcy (Julie), Les (Shelly), Scott (Stasha), and Michael (Lisa). Larry was blessed with many grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. His family was the heart of his world.
In his early years, Larry farmed alongside his father, Grandpa Seitz, learning the value of hard work and the satisfaction of a job done right. Eventually, he transitioned to full‑time work with the County of Newell, where he dedicated over 35 years of service. He began as a bus driver, later becoming a grader operator, assistant supervisor, and ultimately Supervisor of Public Works. Larry's work ethic was unmatched, and his pride in serving the community was evident to all who worked with him.
Larry also devoted many years to faith and fellowship. He was a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Brooks Council 5116 and served as the Financial Secretary for over 30 years. His commitment, reliability, and quiet leadership were deeply valued by all who served alongside him.
Outside of work and community service, Larry poured his energy into the things he loved. He was an active hockey referee for many years, known for his fairness, quick wit, and ability to keep the game moving. When his reffing days came to an end, he joined the Brooks Bandits as part of their security team. Larry and Renee were devoted Bandits fans and season ticket holders, cheering loudly and faithfully from their seats.
Larry was also a gifted storyteller—he could turn any moment into a tale worth hearing. And when he wasn't telling stories, he was cooking. After taking a Chinese cooking course years ago, Larry became a master chef in his own right, famous for creating the best homemade Chinese food around. His meals were legendary, and his kitchen was a place of joy and gathering.
For many years, Larry also served as an "uber/taxi driver" for rodeo kids across Western Canada. He didn't just drive them—he supported them, encouraged them, and became one of their biggest fans. His presence at rodeos was always welcomed, and his impact on the young athletes he transported will be remembered fondly.
Larry lived a life defined by service, humour, generosity, and love. He touched countless lives through his work, his volunteerism, his cooking, his stories, and most of all, through the family he cherished. To know Larry was to know kindness, reliability, and a man who always showed up when needed.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the nurses and care aides in Ward B at the Brooks Hospital who cared for Larry with compassion, dignity, and gentleness. Your kindness brought comfort to him and to our family during a difficult time, and we are deeply grateful.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice directly, or to the Brooks Health Foundation for Palliative Care Unit, Bag 300, Brooks, Alberta T1R 1B3, in Larry's memory.
A Funeral Mass for Lawrence "Larry" Seitz will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Brooks. Rev. Kelvin Chukwurah Celebrant. Interment at Brooks Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
