Laura Dick passed on to her eternal home on July 25th, 2025 at the Brooks Health Center, at the age of 92.

Laura was born in Coaldale, Alberta on January 1st, 1933, lived most of her adult life on the farm in Rosemary with her husband Eric and their family, and spent her last seven years making everyone she met a little bit happier at the Newbrook Lodge in Brooks.

Laura's parents, Peter and Anna Unger, immigrated to Coaldale in the late 1920's and had nine children of which Laura was the second youngest.  As a child, mom was a self-described tomboy.  She had a love of the outdoors and being part of the action; playing baseball as a pitcher in her school years was something she loved, a passion she carried into adulthood. She was a good student and loved expressing her artistic side by sketching, drawing portraits, and writing.

Laura attended Secretary College in Lethbridge and gained employment with the Veterans Land Act.  She decided a break was in order and attended Menno Bible Institute (MBI) in Didsbury, Alberta after the Christmas of 1953.  Eric Dick, who had attended MBI in 1951, had to take a year off from MBI to work on the farm but was able to return in 1953.  The Good Lord, working His perfect plan, put Laura and Eric in each other's path that year.  Laura was armed with her beautiful curly brown hair; Eric was armed with his Harley Davidson 45; neither stood a chance of escaping His plan.  They married on October 15th, 1955.

Mom was a strong woman of faith, prayer warrior, fantastic mother, host, gardener, seamstress, cook, baker, truck driver, soap maker and much more.  Raising three sons and a daughter while supporting a farming operation is no easy task and mom did it with style.  She kept a large garden full of many varieties of flowers, fruits and vegetables.  Her garden was always productive and was used to feed our family, many community families and the steady flow of visitors who were always very welcome on the farm.  It was common to have company - family or friends from near and far – drop in for a visit or a flight in Dad's plane, and enjoy a bowl of borscht, a zwieback, and if they were lucky, one of her family famous caramel buns.

Mom's love of sewing and love for her family was evident in the numerous pyjamas and dresses worn by her grandchildren.  Those same sewing skills were also useful for the many repairs needed due to hard farm living.  Before anyone had heard of SkipTheDishes or Uber Eats, mom was preparing hot meals and delivering them directly to hungry workers in the fields, especially at harvest time, complete with hot and cold drinks, real plates and cutlery, and multiple dessert options.  For many years, she also drove the grain trucks and moved grain from the combines to the yard – a job she absolutely loved.  As an active participant in the Rosemary Mennonite Church Ladies Aide, she sewed, made quilts, and "brewed" many pounds of lye soap that was distributed around the world through MCC.

Mom had an incredible memory for dates, names and event details and acted as our family historian.  To the very end mom loved to hang onto mementos; items such as a card that contained a meaningful poem or verse, photos of everyone and everywhere from ages past, or even special napkins from social events.  It was hard for her to get rid of things that were associated with the people in her life and the love she had for Jesus.

Laura is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Eric; children, Bruce (Karen), Patricia, Ken (Lillian) and Mark (Sonja); grandchildren, Caleigh (Gavin), Emilee (Chris), Bethany (Krishan), Meagan (Connor), Jesse (Kimber), Jordyn, Adrienne (Mitchel), Noah (Angelica), and Amanda; great grandchildren, Dawson, Everett, Emmett, Fletcher, Indy, Charlie, Remi and Brody.  She is also survived by her sisters, Trudy (Henry) Krahn and Louise Epp, many beloved nieces and nephews, Mika Valman and the Dieps who were embraced as family.  She is pre-deceased by her sisters, Marie (Frank) Dyck, Helene (Jim) Mantler, Anne (Lyle) Tetzlaff, Hilda (Dave) Friesen, and Frieda (Jake) Nickel, brother Peter (Margaret) Unger and brother-in-law Werner Epp.

Our family is grateful for the many staff, caregivers and friends at Newbrook Lodge, Dr Van der Linde, and the nursing staff at the Brooks Health Center who provided such exceptional care and kindness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 at 2:00 PM from the Rosemary Mennonite Church.  Pastor Josh Mueller officiating. Interment at Rosemary Cemetery.
