Katherine Grace
Rodwell
Dec 6, 1949 — Oct 16, 2024
Brooks
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine (Kathy) Grace Rodwell on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, at the Brooks Health Centre, at the age of 74 years, after a four-and-a-half year battle with cancer. Kathy was born in Brooks on December 6th, 1949, the third child born to Steve and Mary Yewchuk. Her childhood years were spent in the hamlet of Imperial Colony, east of Patricia, Alberta. After graduating high school in Brooks in 1969, Kathy went to study at Olds College. This led to a government job in downtown Calgary with the social services department. Kathy would later wed Larry Rodwell, and they welcomed their daughter Stephanie in 1977. She helped Larry own and operate the Oasis Hotel in Edgerton, Alberta for 10 years. Seeking a fresh start, Kathy and Stephanie returned to her hometown of Brooks, in 1993. She waitressed at the Petro Canada Restaurant, which later became Humpty's Restaurant. It is here that Kathy met her husband Wayne Closs in 1994. She later worked as receptionist at Trendsetter Manufactured Homes Ltd. until she retired in 2016. Kathy was an avid sports fan, which included cheering on the Calgary Flames and Stampeders, as well as following curling. She enjoyed reading, watching game show reruns and was always up for a cribbage match. Kathy followed the news and was always willing to provide her opinion on politics. She enjoyed going for coffee on Fridays and the new friendships she gained. Kathy's family wishes to thank the staff at the Brooks Health Centre for the exceptional care she received. She was predeceased by her father Steve and mother Mary; brother, Ronald; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Donna and father-in-law, Carman. Kathy is survived by her daughter Stephanie (Scott) Hanson; husband, Wayne Closs; brothers, Robert and Myles (Nancy); mother-in-law, Doris; sisters-in-law, Gloria (Bob) and Donna (Mark); brother-in-law, Larry (Wendy) and numerous nieces and nephews. A private funeral service was held. In memory of Kathy, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Brooks and District Health Foundation, Bag 300, Brooks Alberta T1R 1B3.
