Mr. Hubertus (Bert) Stemkens, 84, peacefully passed away January 10, 2022 in Brooks, Alberta. Bert, being the sixth of eight children, was born to Michael and Elisabeth Stemkens in Roggel, Netherlands. Between 1952-1954 Bert attended the Roermond Trade School to become a carpenter with a specialty in concrete and formwork. As a young man he proudly served in the Netherlands Armed Forces. Bert married Josephina (Jose) in 1962 in his hometown. They began their family in 1963 with the birth of their first child Lillian, quickly followed by Marcel in 1965, just before immigrating to Canada in April of that same year. Their last child, Sarah, was born in 1973. Bert and Jose raised their family in Victoria and Fort St John, BC, and then St. Albert, Alberta. During these years Bert worked in various types of construction as a building inspector and practiced his love of estimating jobs. Bert and Jose returned to Victoria, BC where they resided until Jose passed away. They celebrated 57 years of marriage prior to her death in May 2019. Bert returned to Alberta late in his life to reside in Brooks to live with his youngest daughter and her husband. Throughout his life Bert enjoyed painting, bird watching, golf and being a member of the Canadian Legion. He especially loved going for walks, meeting people in his neighbourhood and sharing his stories. If you were willing to sit and listen Bert was eager to share his words of wisdom. Bert was predeceased by his wife Jose, his sister Agnes, as well as his brothers Matt, Joe, Thomas, and Peter. He is survived by daughter Lillian Merlin and her husband Chris, son Marcel Stemkens and his wife Patty, daughter Sarah Zottl and her husband Christopher, grandchildren Eric Smith and Soraya Timmerman, Corin and Austin Merlin, Maxwell and Zakary Stemkens, Joshua and Raegan Zottl, great grandchildren Xavier and Wyatt Smith, Hunter, Zoe and Jaxon Timmerman, as well as his sisters Mia and Toos. As per Bert's wishes no service will be held.
