Elsie
Nygaard
Mar 23, 1925 — Oct 18, 2025
Brooks
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elsie Nygaard (nee Skuban), who left us on October 18, 2025 in Brooks, at the age of 100 — a beloved aunt and friend. Elsie was born on March 23, 1925, on a farm near Arena, Saskatchewan. In 1941, during the hardships of the Great Depression, the Skuban family moved west to Rolling Hills, Alberta, where Elsie worked tirelessly on the family farm and later held a variety of jobs in both Brooks and Rolling Hills. In 1946, fate stepped in when a young soldier, Alfred Nygaard, returned from World War II and came to Rolling Hills. The two fell in love and married in the spring of 1948. Together, they purchased a farm and began a new chapter filled with love, hard work, and community. Elsie and Alf extended their love even further when they welcomed their niece, Lynn Garett, into their home after she was orphaned at a young age. They raised her as their own, providing not just shelter, but unwavering love and family. After decades on the farm, they moved to Bassano in 1990 for a quieter life. Following Alf's passing, Elsie moved to Newbrook Lodge, where she continued to thrive — building new friendships and becoming a beloved figure in the community. Her humour, strength, willingness to join in every activity, and wisdom earned her the admiration of residents and staff alike. Elsie was known for her impeccable style — always dressed to the nines, with a sparkle of jewelry to match her vibrant personality. At 99 years old, she discovered a love for diamond art, spending hours creating pieces that reflected her love of beauty and detail. Elsie is the end of an era, outliving all of her siblings. Reaching the incredible milestone of 100 years, she remained sharp, engaged, and full of life. Her legacy is not just in the years she lived, but in the strength, kindness, and love she shared so generously with those around her. She is deeply mourned and lovingly remembered by Lynn (Garett) and Walt Wasilenko, their children, one brother-in-law, Norris Nygaard, numerous nieces and nephews, caregiver and friend Isobel Summerbell, extended family, dear friends, and the many whose lives she touched over a century of living. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Smith Memorial Chapel, 204 – 3rd Ave W, Brooks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newbrook Lodge Comfort Fund. e-Transfer to: finance@newhf.ca Please indicate "Comfort Fund" in the message section of the e-transfer.
