Bertha Teresa Figeczki (nee Simo) of Brooks, beloved wife of the late Steve Figeczki, passed away in Brooks on Friday, October 27 th , 2017 at the age of 93 years. Born in Satu Mare, Hungary on June 28 th , 1924 to Albert and Julia Simo, Bertha and her parents moved to Tilley, when she was 5 years old. Bertha received her education in Tilley. She married Steve Figeczki on December 26 th , 1947 and together they resided and farmed in Tilley. They moved to Brooks in 1965, where Bertha worked for Kroll's Butcher Shop and later the Betty Shop (Women's fashions store). She loved playing Bridge and Scrabble, which she also won medals at the Alberta Senior's Game. Bertha also loved to travel, and cruised with her dear friends Leona and Magdalen. She also enjoyed the sport of equestrian and would often go to Spruce Meadows to watch the horses. Bertha will be remembered for her cooking of cabbage rolls and stuffed peppers and her baking of poppy seed and walnut pastries. She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1982 and an infant brother. Bertha will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her children, son Bill and his wife Marita of Calgary and daughter Teresa Freiman and her husband Larry of Wetaskiwin; 4 grandchildren, Steven (Lisa) Figeczki, Rob (Tracy) Freiman, James (Lauren) Figeczki and Catherine (Chuck) Love; 4 great grandchildren; 2 siblings, Joe (Loretta) Simo of Tilley and Elonka Specter of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 4 th at 11:00 AM from Smith Memorial Chapel. Deacon Robert N.J. Wilson officiating. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery. In memory of Bertha, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to either Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Room 124 Professional Building, 430 – 6 th Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2S8 or STARS, Suite 100, 1519 – 35 th Avenue East, Edmonton International Airport T9E 0V6.
Cremation is entrusted to Smith Funeral Home Ltd. and Crematorium, Brooks.
