Barbara Elaine Bogda nee Scheuer of Medicine Hat, AB was born in Didsbury, AB December 18, 1947 and went home to be with the Lord Jesus April 12, 2026. Baptized into Christ Jesus at Redeemer Lutheran Church on January 4, 1948, she confirmed her faith in Christ when she was 14 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Calgary. Barbara was predeceased by her daughter Angela May Wilcox in 2020, parents Henry and Martha Scheuer in 1990 and 2004, sister Myrna Hemming in 2011, and brother Earl Scheuer in 2018. She's survived by her husband of 57 years, Carl Bogda, daughter Teresa (Darcy) Winberg-Phillips and children Cora and Mariel; two sisters Norma Stock and Deanna (Ron) Towriss; granddaughter Jennifer (Aaron) Sturm and children Barrett, Dalton, Senora; grandson Andrew (Seonaid) Fabian and children Abrey, Zoe, Oliver, Elijah, Sadie; grandson Stephen; grandson Cody (Britney) Wilcox; granddaughter Courtney (Nolan) Rubia and children Bentley and Hunter. She was proud of and had great joy in being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins among the Scheuer, Oberhammer, Trekofski, and Cooper families; and Carl's brothers and sisters and their families.
Barbara loved the Lord and dedicated her life to his service at an early age. Because she wanted to be a teacher all her life and also wanted to serve the Lord she went to Lutheran High School at Concordia Edmonton and Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. Because she also loved music, she sang in the college Kapelle choir and was thrilled when the choir was invited to sing for President Lyndon Johnson at the national Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Washington DC in 1966. Near the end of that school year she met her husband Carl because he was also in the choir. She married him in 1968 and taught three years in Lutheran schools in the Chicago area. One year she had one of Bobby Hull's boys (Blake, I think) in one of those classes, making parent-teacher interviews that year especially thrilling for her.
She moved back to Canada in 1971 with Carl and with baby Angela in her arms, and baby Teresa in her womb. When Carl felt called to Pastoral ministry, the family moved to Saskatoon where, in order to provide income and return to teaching, she upgraded her education at University of Saskatchewan earning a Canadian Degree, in order to get a teaching certificate there and taught in three schools in Saskatoon East School District. She also taught in Alberta (Edmonton, Duchess, Vauxhaul). Her husband and family were proud that she was teacher of the year 1987/88 while teaching in Duchess.
Barbara took training in piano and organ when she was young and became organist in Taber and Duchess Lutheran Churches where her husband was Pastor. She taught Sunday School in every congregation we joined and enjoyed doing crafts with her students in school and Church. Outside the classroom she created many stoles, altar paraments, and church banners, sometimes with the help of others. In retirement, she created many Christmas and Easter Cantatas for the Chinook Village choir and even when struggling with deteriorating health, contributed the foundational ideas and chose the songs for the 2026 Easter Cantata and was able to sing with the choir just two weeks before her death.
She will be greatly missed by her husband and all of her family, students, neighbors and friends. You are encouraged to come to her funeral on Monday, April 20th at St Paul Lutheran Church, 515 Sprague Way SE, Medicine Hat, AB at 11:00 AM. Rev Andy Kahle will officiate. Everyone is invited for lunch following the service and to the interment at Duchess Cemetery. You are also encouraged to donate in her memory to support the Christian ministry of your choice.
