It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ani (Nemeth) Gunderson, on Monday, May 25th, 2026, in Medicine Hat, Alberta a devoted mother, grandmother, and woman of remarkable strength, family and unconditional love. Anica was born in Szombathely, Hungary to Liz and Jim Nemeth on November 23rd, 1955. She began her life in a story of courage in 1957, at just two years old, when they fled Hungary in the wake of the Hungarian revolution, arriving on Canadian soil in search of safety and a brighter future. Her family settled in Rosemary, Alberta, where they worked for a local farmer. From a very young age, Ani learnt responsibility and care for others. Her mother, Elizabeth Nemeth owned and operated the Crystal Café & Steak loft in Brooks, working long 14 hour days to provide for her family as a single mother of three. During those years, Ani helped raise her two younger brothers and, in many ways, they would become her first children. Those early experiences shaped the compassionate, selfless, and deeply devoted woman she would become. Ani attended School in Brooks from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and it was there that she met the man who would become the love of her life. Ani and Terry became inseparable at a young age, building a love story that would span 40 years of marriage. They were married on January 15th, 1975, in Lethbridge, Alberta. A day that marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership. It is fondly remembered that Terry would take Ani out for the evening and when bringing her home he would drive around the block honking his horn repeatedly making sure she and everyone nearby knew just how much he loved her and how proud he was to call her his. The two of them built a close-knit family of 5 children, Richard, Robert, Jackie, Nicole and Terri. If you had seen Ani around, usually one or more of her children were always close by, and in later years her 7 grandchildren. She loved her family with all her being and cherished every moment with them. Ani was a hard-working woman, who spent much of her life caring for and taking pride in creating a loving home for Terry, her children, and the many friends who passed through Momma G's front door. Later her strong work ethic led her to establish her own residential and commercial cleaning business. She had many long-lasting clients through the years, they became much more than customers-they were dear friends and, in many ways, an extension of her family. It wasn't uncommon for Ani to leave homemade baking behind after cleaning a client's home or surprise them with a homemade birthday cake on their special day. In return the love and appreciation people felt for her is something truly special. Ani could often be found at Safeway picking up her daily groceries. What started as a routine became a cherished part of her day, and over the years she became a familiar and beloved face within the store. Whether she was chatting with staff, catching up with friends or meeting someone new. Her kitchen was the heart of her home filled with countless hours of traditional family meals or baking, carrying on the talents she learned from her mother. Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley's songs often drifted through the house as she worked to provide those exceptional meals. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the countless memories Ani leaves behind. She will be forever loved and deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends. Ani was predeceased by her beloved husband Terry, who passed away in 2011; her cherished son, Robert Gunderson; parents, Elizabeth (Liz) and James (Jim) Nemeth; brothers, Jack and Steven Nemeth and her fathers-in-law, Richard Gunderson and Robert Bremner. She leaves behind her loving children, Richard Gunderson, Jackie (Steve) Walden, Nicole (Curtis) Lundy and Terri Gunderson; she was a proud and devoted grandmother to Briley, Carter and Kaydee Walden, Trace, Dannika and Blakely Lundy and Devyn Gunderson each of whom she loved beyond measure. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law Carole Gunderson; sisters in-law, Kim (Dennis) Moreau and Penny Gunderson; niece Jennifer Denholm and nephews Jason and Daniel Fleischer and John and Mitch Haldane. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Brooks Health Centre emergency department and the Intensive Care Unit at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for their exceptional care shown to our mother during her final days. Your work and dedication brought comfort to our entire family, and for that we are grateful. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, at 2:00 PM from the Heritage Inn Hotel and Convention Centre in Brooks. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow the service. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Ani's life.
